I had to stop at my office to pick up some materials before I was to continue on to a breakfast meeting at Windows of the World. The date was September 11, 2001. I was running late for the meeting and by the time I had gathered my materials the events of the day had begun to transpire. The colleague that I was to meet arrived early for the meeting to take in the views of Manhattan and perished in the attack on The World Trade Center.
Looking for a way to deal with the loss of a friend and colleague, as well as, the enormity of the situation, I turned to drums. Purchasing a new kit, cymbals, and sticks; I developed a dedication to play as a form of therapy.
Rediscovering the joys of music and playing the drums inspired me to learn more and play along with classic rock songs. When playing along to Free’s “All Right Now” I noticed a drum roll in the middle of the song that was not on the single version.
Puzzled by this new twist and confused as how to play the drum roll I did what seemed logical. I contacted Simon Kirke, the legendary drummer from Free and Bad Company. What started as a simple e-mail question turned into Rockstarz, Inc.
Simon Kirke and I discussed drumming and what it meant to be the Rock Star and the fan. We researched the market and realized that no one had developed a teaching DVD by Rock Stars for the fan to play along.
Working with Simon Kirke has been a great privilege but learning the fills of his greatest Bad Company and Free hits has been a dream come true.
I hope you have as much fun playing and learning from Simon as I have.
